LIS : Wich camera do you use ? Quel appareil-photo utilises-tu ?
MATT : I mostly use the Fujifilm X-Pro3 as my everyday carry coupled with either the xf35mm 1.4 or the 56mm 1.2. I have always shot with the X-series cameras, starting out with the, then, entry level X-m1 before upgrading to the X-t1 which I adore and still regularly use.
MATT : J'utilise principalement le Fujifilm X-Pro3 comme appareil de tous les jours couplé au xf35mm 1.4 ou au 56mm 1.2. J'ai toujours travaillé avec les appareil-photos de la série X, en commençant par le X-m1 d'entrée de gamme avant de passer au X-t1 que j'adore et que j'utilise encore régulièrement.
LIS : Why the choice of Fujifilm brand ? Pourquoi le choix de la marque Fujifilm ?
MATT : For me the X-series cameras are everything I need, small and light enough to carry all day with intuitive controls and a comforting familiarity between the cameras. They do what I want them to do and I’m glad of that.
MATT : Les appareil-phots de la série X intègrent tout ce dont j'ai besoin. Ils sont petits, légers et peuvent être transportés facilement. J'apprécie beaucoup leurs réglages intuitifs que je retrouve sur tous leurs appareils. Ils correspondent totalement à mes besoins et j'en suis très satisfait.
LIS : What brought you to photography ? Qu'est-ce qui t'a amené à la photographie ?
MATT : It was originally to document my children growing up. Although I had an interest in photography at a younger age it wasn’t something that I pursued until later on.
MATT : Au départ, c'était pour photographier mes enfants en train de grandir. Bien que j'ai pu m'intéresser à la photo dès mon plus jeune âge, ce n'est pas à ce moment-là que j'y suis réellement venu.
LIS : Why did you choose street photography ? Pourquoi la street photo ?
MATT : I kind of fell into it. When my youngest child was born, I found myself walking the streets a lot as a means of getting him to sleep. Whilst on these walks, I became more appreciative of where I lived and paid more attention to the buildings, architecture and inhabitants. I then started taking my camera out on these walks to capture the scenes and characters. It was about 6 months later when I went into a bookshop to look at photography tutorial books, that I stumbled across an Elliott Erwitt book. That was the moment I realized what street photography was and that I was practicing it.
MATT : Je suis tombé dedans quand mon plus jeune enfant est né. Je me suis retrouvé à beaucoup marcher dans les rues pour l'endormir. Au fil de ces promenades, je suis devenu plus sensible à mon environnement et j'ai accordé plus d'attention aux bâtiments, à l'architecture et aux gens qui y vivent. J'ai alors commencé à sortir mon appareil-photo lors de ces promenades pour capturer les situations et les gens. Environ 6 mois plus tard, je me suis rendu dans une librairie pour regarder des livres de photographie et je suis tombé sur un livre d'Elliott Erwitt. C'est à ce moment-là que j'ai réalisé ce qu'était la photographie et que c'est ce que je pratiquais sans le savoir.
LIS : What do you want to express through your work ? Que souhaites-tu principalement exprimer à travers ton travail ?
MATT : I try to create an element of mystery in my images allowing the audience to join the dots and create their own narrative.
MATT : J'essaie de créer un élément de mystère dans mes images permettant au public de s'y connecter et de créer son propre récit.
LIS : What are your preferred settings when you shoot ? Quels sont tes réglages de prédilection quand tu shootes ?
MATT : Obviously my settings are very much dependent on the conditions, environment and type of shot. I shoot manual but I do mostly use auto focus with the exception of some window work where the lens will tend to struggle.
MATT : Mes réglages dépendent évidemment beaucoup des conditions, de l'environnement et du type de prise de vue. Je photographie manuellement mais j'utilise principalement la mise au point automatique, en dehors de certains cas, comme à travers les fenêtres où l'objectif aura tendance à patiner.
LIS : What characterizes for you a successful street photography ? Qu'est-ce qui caractérise pour toi une photo de rue réussie ?
MATT : Being able to make your work stand out from others is important, especially considering the amount of photographers working in the genre nowadays. My favourite photographers work is instantly recognisable and that is born through following their own path in the industry.
MATT : Il est important de pouvoir faire en sorte que son travail se démarque des autres, surtout compte tenu du nombre important de photographes travaillant dans la street de nos jours. Le travail de mes photographes préférés est immédiatement reconnaissable et cela vient du fait qu'ils aient toujours suivi leur propre chemin tout en faisant parti de l'industrie photographique.
LIS : What is the most beautiful street pic that you have taken ? And why this one ?Quel est pour toi la plus belle photo de rue Self-que tu aies prise ? Et pourquoi celle-ci ?
MATT : I have an image ‘Red van in the snow’ which is most dearest to me. For me, it is a shot which can’t be replicated, where the process was as satisfying as the end result. The scene emptied at the perfect time leaving the single subject isolated and silhouetted in the frame. It’s a very simple shot with only three elements but the vivid red against the snow, the composition and the focal point really make it.
MATT : J'ai une photo nommée "Camionnette rouge dans la neige" qui m'est plus chère que les autres. Pour moi, c'est un cliché qui ne peut pas être reproduit, où le processus était aussi important que le résultat final. La scène s'est mise en place au moment idéal, laissant le sujet unique isolé et se découpant dans le cadre. C'est une photo très simple avec seulement trois éléments, mais le rouge vif qui tranche avec la neige, la composition et le point focal donnent vraiment quelque chose d'unique à cette photo.
LIS : What are your influences and inspirations ? D'où te viennent tes principales inspirations et influences ?
MATT : I have a lot of influences in photography, Saul Leiter, Fred Herzog, Ernst Haas and of course Elliott Erwitt but there are also a lot of contemporary photographers and artists that I find hugely inspiring. I now live in a town full of great artists and galleries and hugely enjoy immersing myself in their works.
MATT : J'ai beaucoup d'influences dans la photographie. Saul Leiter, Fred Herzog, Ernst Haas et bien sûr Elliott Erwitt. Mais il y a aussi beaucoup de photographes et d'artistes contemporains que je trouve extrêmement inspirants. Je vis dans une ville pleine de grands artistes et avec de nombreuses galeries et j'aime énormément me plonger dans leurs œuvres.
LIS : What great photographic project would you like to realize one day ? Quel grand projet photographique aimerais-tu réaliser un jour ?
MATT : I have several small projects running currently but I would still love to travel more and create a major project from those journeys. I’d love to go on a road trip across America !
MATT : J'ai plusieurs petits projets en cours actuellement, mais j'aimerais toujours voyager davantage et créer un projet majeur à partir de ces voyages. J'adorerais faire un road trip à travers l'Amérique !
