LIS : Wich camera do you use ? Quel appareil-photo utilises-tu ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : I've been using the Leica Q2 since the day it came out, and even a little bit before thanks to Leica. And before I was using the Leica Q. I'm not a hardware geek, with the Q range I found what I was looking for : efficiency, speed, sobriety and solidity.
CÉDRIC ROUX : J'utilise le Leica Q2 depuis qu'il est sorti et j'ai même pu l'obtenir un peu avant grâce à Leica que je remercie. Plus avant encore, j'utilisais le Leica Q. Je ne suis pas un geek du matériel et avec la gamme Q j'ai trouvé ce que je cherchais : efficacité, rapidité, sobriété et solidité.
LIS : What brought you to photography ? Qu'est-ce qui t'a amené à la photographie ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : It's mainly photo books that brought me to photography. I looked at and analyzed many photo books of great masters of photography before daring to photograph the street myself. And the trigger was my first trip to NY for my 30th birthday, after I was given a camera. Since that day, I try to make pictures. The cinema also gave me the desire to compose images.
CÉDRIC ROUX : Ce sont principalement les livres photos qui m'ont amené à la photographie. J'ai lu et analysé de nombreux livres de grands maîtres de la photographie avant d'oser me lancer moi-même dans la photographie de rue. Le déclencheur a été mon premier voyage à New York pour mes 30 ans, après qu'on m'ait donné un appareil photo. Depuis ce jour, j'essaie de m'inscrire durablement dans la street photo. Le cinéma m'a aussi donné l'envie de composer des images.
LIS : Why did you choose street photography ? Pourquoi la street photo ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : Street photography is what naturally attracts me because this practice only requires a camera. The models are the passers-by, the lighting is the sun or the reflection of the windows of buildings. Finally, I like this solitary practice, without exchanging with the photographed persons.
CÉDRIC ROUX : La photographie de rue est ce qui m'attire naturellement car cette pratique ne nécessite qu'un appareil photo. Les modèles sont les passants, l'éclairage est le soleil ou le reflet des fenêtres des immeubles. Enfin, j'aime cette pratique solitaire, sans devoir forcément échanger avec les personnes photographiées.
LIS : What do you want to express through your work ? Que souhaites-tu principalement exprimer à travers ton travail ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : Through photography, I simply try to show people what they don't take the time to see. I want to show the world as I see it: the good and the bad.
CÉDRIC ROUX : Par la photographie, j'essaie simplement de montrer aux gens ce qu'ils ne prennent pas le temps de voir. Je veux montrer le monde tel que je le vois : ce qu'il y a de bon comme ce qu'il y a de mauvais.
LIS : You will soon release a book, what made you decide to publish this first book entitled Wonderland ? Tu vas bientôt sortir un livre, qu'est-ce qui t'as décidé à éditer ce premier livre intitulé Wonderland ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : In fact, a call for authors was organized by Wipplay in partnership with the French printer Escourbiac, I simply applied with this series which is particularly close to my heart : Wonderland !
CÉDRIC ROUX : Un appel à auteurs a été organisé par Wipplay en partenariat avec l'imprimeur français Escourbiac. J'ai tout simplement postulé avec cette série qui me tenais particulièrement à cœur : Wonderland !
LIS : How did you finance the publication of this book ? De quelle manière as-tu financé l'édition de ce livre ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : The book is finally carried by a publishing house (Editions Odyssée) which liked the project and will be distributed in bookstores from September. The publishing house thus finances the book in part. In addition, a personal sponsor and the pre-order campaign that began on January 27, 2022 on Ulule.
CÉDRIC ROUX : Le livre est finalement porté par une maison d'édition (Editions Odyssée) qui a aimé le projet et il sera distribué en librairie à partir de septembre. La maison d'édition finance ainsi en partie la publication du livre. A cela, s'ajoutent un sponsor personnel et la campagne de précommande qui a débuté le 27 janvier 2022 sur la plateforme Ulule.
LIS : How did you picked the photos in the book ? Comment as-tu procédé pour le choix des photos présentes dans le livre ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : The choice of images is the result of meticulous editing and sequencing work to arrive at a coherent whole that corresponds to my vision of Manhattan. Photographer Matt Stuart gave me valuable tips from his experience.
CÉDRIC ROUX : Le choix des images est le résultat d'un travail minutieux de montage et de séquençage pour arriver à un ensemble cohérent qui corresponde à ma vision de Manhattan. Le photographe Matt Stuart m'a apporté de précieux conseils issus de son expérience.
LIS : Can you tell us more about your link with New-York and tell us why this city is so precious to you photographically ? Peux-tu nous parler un peu de ton lien avec New-York et nous dire pourquoi cette ville t'es si précieuse photographiquement ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : New York is the city that made me want to do street photography thanks to the images of Richard Sandler, Garry Winogrand, Joel Meyerowitz and others. Moreover, it is in this city that I started artistic photography 10 years ago
CÉDRIC ROUX : New York est la ville qui m'a donné envie de faire de la photographie de rue grâce aux images de Richard Sandler, Garry Winogrand, Joel Meyerowitz et d'autres. C'est d'ailleurs dans cette ville que j'ai commencé la photographie artistique il y a maintenant 10 ans.
LIS : Do you think publishing a book is a necessary step for a photographer's accomplishment ? L'édition d'un livre est-elle selon toi une étape nécessaire pour l'accomplissement d'un photographe ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : Releasing a book is often considered a necessary step for a photographer's accomplishment, and as a lover and collector of the photo book I pretty much agree with this opinion, however, every photographer may think differently, especially in this day and age. For me, the most important thing to accomplish as a photographer is to do what inspires you personally rather than doing what others expect you to do.
CÉDRIC ROUX : La publication d'un livre est souvent considérée comme une étape nécessaire à l'accomplissement d'un photographe, et en tant qu'amoureux et collectionneur de livres photos, je suis assez d'accord avec cette opinion. Cependant, chaque photographe est libre penser différemment, surtout de nos jours. Pour moi, la chose la plus importante à accomplir en tant que photographe est de faire confiance à son inspiration personnelle plutôt que de faire ce que les autres attendent de vous.
LIS : What characterizes for you a successful street photographer ? Qu'est-ce qui caractérise pour toi une photo de rue réussie ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : For me, a successful street photo is simply a photo that is remembered, that touches the person who looks at it.
CÉDRIC ROUX : Pour moi, une photo de rue réussie est simplement une photo dont on se souvient, qui touche la personne qui la regarde.
LIS : What are your influences and inspirations ? D'où te viennent tes principales inspirations et influences ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : As I said, I collect books and therefore my influences are numerous. They range from Joel Sternfeld, to Alex Webb, to Meyerowitz, Winogrand, Epstein or Alec Soth without forgetting Gruyaert, Papageorge... There are so many inspiring photographers.
CÉDRIC ROUX : Comme je l'ai dit, je collectionne les livres de photos et donc mes influences sont nombreuses. Elles vont de Joel Sternfeld, à Alex Webb, en passant par Meyerowitz, Winogrand, Epstein ou Alec Soth, sans oublier Gruyaert, Papageorge... Il y a tellement de photographes inspirants.
LIS : What great photographic project would you like to realize one day ? Quel grand projet photographique aimerais-tu réaliser un jour ?
CÉDRIC ROUX : One thing at a time. I have to finalize this first book. But if I ever had the choice, I would love to photograph all the USA during 2-3 years non stop. From remote and sparsely populated states to big cities, in short, to take the time to photograph and rephotograph.
CÉDRIC ROUX : Une chose à la fois. Je dois d'abord finaliser ce premier livre. Mais si jamais j'avais le choix, j'aimerais photographier tous les USA pendant 2-3 ans non stop. Des états reculés et peu peuplés aux grandes villes. Bref, prendre le temps de photographier et rephotographier.
